Ahram Jeong : Performance Minimum

In responding to the recent global movements based on pushing back against greater forms of efficiency, Ahram Jeong’s solo exhibition Performance Minimum examines the performance of individuals that has become subjected to constant evaluation and remodeling in response to productivity, efficacy, and normativity. Nowadays, the pressure to always perform regardless of task (always at the risk of becoming obsolete, fired, or disposed of) is deeply embedded in one’s performance - and this includes artists. The works in the exhibition visualize the suspension and pause of existing forms of performance, exploring the possibility and value of ‘performance minimum’ in the current conditions.

Through organizing performance and interviews with artists and cultural workers, self-employed or temporary employed, new work with the same name of exhibition title, Performance Minimum and Performance Minimum: The Interview, presents the processes and outcomes of collaboration. With a performance consisting of marking the outline of stilled bodies on the ground, in the interview session of ‘my performance’ presents the interviewees talking about everyday activities with performance concepts, experiences of burning-out and exhaustion, physical and psychological symptoms that follow, being at the limit where one can no longer perform, and another life they envision after it. The voices of middle school students delivering the words of these participants of various generations reveals the intensifying pressure to perform as passing through different generations, in foresight of their own future to come.

Presented to Korean audiences for the first time, No More Picture With A Dead Body, this newly reconstructed version in dialogue with the new work, questions not only the ethics of one’s image production, distribution, and transmission but also the performance of one’s body and apparatus as it is reorganized in the pressure of maximizing efficiency.

In the live installation work, No More Picture With A Dead Body, where participating performers cycle throughout the exhibition period, the heartbeat of a participant lying on circular pedestals triggers the shutter and flash of a camera and the resulting images are projected onto the gallery wall in real time. As the control of the camera is relinquished to the performer’s heartbeat, it randomly captures not the performer’s but the audience’s images. The performer who assumes a paused and inactive state invert our conventional expectation of the centrality of the performer in its relation towards the audience. In this performative situation, the result is a form of evidence of ongoing inter-dependent relationships generated in-between many subjects, the artist, performer/participants, audience, and apparatus.
